Sorry, doesn't get my vote.

by Sophoclease

I grew up in the South. I know how to cook and (most importantly) eat Southern food. There's quite a bit here... but I've had two experiences at this restaurant and both of them were less than satisfying. Both visits resulted in VERY slow service issues. My second visit required a twenty minute wait to get our check - AFTER we asked for it. The food is over cooked and VASTLY under seasoned. I guess if you are into large amounts of food that is suitable to look at and very hard to eat you are in for a treat. But, if you are like me, you might want to take your tantalized taste buds elsewhere to find that delectable dish of greens, mashed potatoes, and grilled fish with a side of corn bread... somewhere that at least uses salt and respectable table service.

  • Pros: It's edible.
  • Cons: Expensive. Slow. Under-seasoned. Over-cooked.

Outstanding Seafood!

by WillaNurse

I was passing by this place with a friend and we decided to stop. What a great place. We had a little service issue at first but as soon as our waiter was notified he was ON IT! And he even gave us two full bowls of soup to make up for our wait. The food was excellent and I would go back in a heartbeat!

  • Pros: Comfortable and casual
  • Cons: Can be a little loud but no big deal.

Better than Red Lobster!

by tatercuz

The catfish and shrimp at the Catfish Place is fantastic. Red Lobster is lucky not to many people know about this place or else they might go out of business. 5 STARS!

Worth the trip (we'll be back!)

by Carol_S

Having researched Citysearch before we left from New Jersey for business in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, and Mount Dora, we wanted to try the Catfish Place. It was easy to find by way of the large sign on the corner of the highway. Jerry, our server, seated us immediately and was the perfect gentleman. The all-you-can-eat boneless catfish was delicious - crispy two-bite strips, piled around fries and hush puppies. Couldn't even finish the first plateful. Fried shrimp was tasty, too. Coleslaw was terrific (just like Mom's). We were so full that we ordered our Key Lime Pie to go! Decor is dark but "homey" - assorted antiques, aquarium, plus a model train chugging around the ceiling. It was worth the trip between our meetings to find this little gem off the highway. We'll return to the Catfish Place on our next trip to central Florida.

  • Pros: service, big portions, delicious

Frog legs, gator tail and catfish; this out-of-the-way restaurant dishes up Southern-fried favorites worth the long trip.

The Scene
About an hour away from most parts of Orlando, Apopka is a little farther from the tourist areas and the appearance of the Catfish Place, which is as rustic as the name suggests, might give you a moment's pause.

The Food
But inside, plentiful portions of frog legs--strips of Kermit's kin, crunchy and deep fried--and gator tail nuggets are dished up as appetizers. (For the uninitiated, gator really does taste like chicken.) Skip the preliminaries and dive right in to the main course with the house special: a huge platter loaded with boneless catfish tenders, fried shrimp, frog legs, fried scallops, and gator tail. All dinners come complete with a choice of side items like tart coleslaw swimming in dressing, buttery mounds of collard greens, and hash browns topped with melted cheese and onions.
