Bananas Diner / Funky Monkey - BaNO!NO!NO!. Well, after reading the "other" reviews - i think i am ready for "a butt ripping" that someone will send my way. Saturday, my day off- wanted to go and eat Lunch- went on-line and looked up Bananas and made a reservation. Arrived on time -10 minutes early - and was promply seated past the walk-in's - which i was thankful for. ordered the basic lunch, bowl of the soup'dour and the mango ice tea. After watching other patrons come, served and go -and watching out the window -patrons of the next door food EST come and go. I waited until our server finally came back. Basically, i am a quite and easy going person- I know business's have good days and bad. BUT COME ON NOW- Be Real! It took 30 minutes for our soup to arrive - and after an hour -the simple meal was no where in sight. I watched serveral people come and go, even saw the Manager come in - grab a bite from the kitchen and sit a table just beyond me and enjoy her meal. It looked good- (Fish, i think.) So, my review would be this: I love food and enjoy giving my money to gay friendly establishments. But you have to give me "the food" -so i can tell people how wonderful it is. I want you to know - I left you busniess and went directly to Mediterranean Blue on the corner of E.Michigan St/ Oseola and ordered my food - took out my iphone and set the timer -just to see if I was the impatient one. It took 7:17 seconds from start to my table- and they were busier, Freindly, kind and i will be back. Please NO hate mail - save it for your bussiness partners. Oh, and by the way - I do not think I will be trying out "Funky Monkey" either, this first experience of Bananas will be with me for a while - and I will tell my firends about it - I know how valuable my gay $$$ are worth - and who appreciates them.
Great Catering!. I have enjoyed Funky Monkey's incredible food on a number of occasions, and have always been extremely pleased! I would especially recommend Funky Monkey for catering. Eddie and his incredible staff catered an event for well over 300 people for our group, and they did an incredible job. People raved over the quality and quantity of the gourmet menu the Funky Monkey chefs prepared. The bar service was wonderful, as drinks were served quickly and efficiently, avoiding the bar back-up that so frequently happens with groups of this size. But with Funky Monkey's professional service and attention to detail, everyone had as much food and drink as they pleased, with ease. We especially enjoyed the beef sliders and ahi tuna appetizers that were served! It is one thing to prepare incredible food for restaurant parties; it is another thing to take a gourmet menu to a grand scale and dazzle the tastebuds of more than 300 people! I strongly recommend Funky Monkey to anyone who is looking for a memorable dinner or for a caterer for events, large and small.
One of my favorite places. I can bring anyone here from my 86-year-old parents, to college students and everyone in between. Unpretentious but distinctive. Food is wonderful, good wine in various price ranges. Make a reservation for weekends. The earlier, really, the better. It was WAY too crowded around 8:30 on a Saturday night....but maybe it was just that particular Saturday night.
A great locals place - great food - decent wine.
When you drive by this place on Mills - if you blink or yawn you'll miss it . Nothing notable from the outside - other than the monkey on the sign is a bit scary looking. But when you step inside that's where the fun begins -- you feel transformed and almost need a double take - you're likely to think 'this is what I expected from the outside'.
The best part of the experience is really the food (which is a good thing considering it IS a restaurant). A differnet approach to the menu 1/3 sushi and the rest more traditional american contempory and fusion plates. The sushi is good - large rolls that are quite filling...all good but fairly pedestrian- so if you're looking for unusual sushi - look elsewhere. The appetizers are good - some interesting options - from asian to mediterranean inspired. The entrees are the best part in my opinion - ingredients taste fresh - the presentations are not overly complicated and the dishes are a little lighter but certainly satisfying...the pork tenderloins is great as are the several seafood entrees that I've had.
The wine list is okay and there are some decent selections -- but being the wine lover/snob that I am - found it a bit disappointing for a restaurant that also calls itself a wine bar.
The part of the experience with the greatest opportunity is the service - they are nice and friendly - but it is consistently slow -- it may not be their fault - but it takes awhile for the food to come out of the kitchen...so order all your courses up front if you want to enjoy an even pace for the meal.
Overall - one of the better local restaurants - with the great food the slow service is bearable.
Experience an elegantly prepared meal paired with wine in a casual chic ambiance near downtown..
In Short
Step inside a dimly lit room after being greeted by monkey figurines, and dine by candlelight at this Orlando wine bar. The dining destination features over 100 bottles of wine and menu offerings run the gamet, from fresh hand-rolled sushi to ostrich filets and bison burgers. The décor includes funky artwork on the walls and a plush couch amongst cozy environs, which provide an ideal milieu for group dining. At times, the venue hosts four-course gourmet wine dinners accompanied by drag shows for the guest's unconventional entertainment.
