Editorial Review for Buca di Beppo – by Saira Masood
In Short
Homesick for your mother's Italian cooking? Grab your appetite and head to this restaurant, where the friendly wait staff will serve up portions of Colosseum-esque proportions, like spaghetti and meatballs loaded with savory tomato sauce and lots of pungent garlic. Dishes center on Southern Italian immigrant fare, and are meant to be shared family-style with a large goblet of wine-to enhance the taste, of course. The ornate décor with walls covered in vintage photos evokes a warm homey feel that welcomes customers to dine among the other families and loyal customers. Buon Appetito!

Insider Tips
Where To SitIf you have a large party, reserve the circular "Pope's Table." Special occasion? Request the kitchen table, where diner's can watch all the behind-the-scenes restaurant action.

My husband and I have eaten at Buca's many times and enjoy the delicious food and festive environment. If you're planning to go, I'd recommend making reservations by phone or online. Without reservation, you may have to wait awhile. Reservations are especially important if you'd like to dine at the kitchen table - a large booth located in the kitchen where you can see various entrees being prepared and delivered to customers. Also, if you sign up for the email list on their website, you'll receive special discounts and coupons from time to time, as well as updated information about new menu items and changes in restaurant hours. All in all, a great place to dine. We recommend it!
Pros: good food, great value, picture of nuns playing bumper cars ;-)
Cons: not conducive to quiet conversations on a busy night

Nice ambience and good downtown location, decent sized bar, off-street parking (while it lasts) are the good points of this restaurant. But in the end it is still an average Italian chain restaurant. Two occasions left me with a bad taste in my mouth, the last being a nasty assistant manager, the first being the exclusion of salad dressing from a $$$$$ enormous catering order. Usually when management is not up to par, the service of the whole staff reflects it. I always felt like the staff was doing me a favor, which is a turn off. But it seems to be a popular place and as such, I was invited many times to large gatherings of friends at this restaurant. Based on my experiences I would not choose this restaurant. My S.O. and I spend a lot of time and money traveling and dining out here and elsewhere. As a frequent business traveler I also dine in many cities, mostly at upscale establishments, occasionally at chain restaurants... I'm experienced at dining out. If you like the chain restaurants, Maggiano's is superior for Italian food in a chain restaurant. That said, Milwaukee is a diner's dream come true... and if you're looking for Italian, a lot of places do it better without going to the chains.
Pros: Nice atmosphere, good for large groups, lots of food, nice break from suburban strip mall chains
Cons: Chain restaurant, chain restaurant service
