Editorial Review for Shula's Steak House – by

In Short
The chop house's elegance is indisputable, yet there is an oddly casual spirit to a place in which the menu is written on a football and set at your table on a kicking tee. Certified Angus Beef doesn't come cheap, and the sides are priced a la carte, but the nationally renowned steakhouse always finds a way to make the cut for those willing to pay for quality.

I've been to all the chain restaurants in Orlando and I must say that this is the best in this city! I have been to other Shula's in Florida and all I can say is WOW! I'm not if it is the "Disney Magic," but this one is head and shoulders above the others....I had the New York Strip (an indicator of a great steak house), cooked Medium rare and it was delicous. Maybe a little large for my liking, but I did manage to finish it! The sides are plentiful and served steak house style (may I recommend the twice backed potato) and the King Crab Claw appetizer was just massive....service was friendly and prompt and they even validated my parking for me and called my car around (which was a nice touch.) I was a huge fan of Morton's, but on recent visits I have not been overly impressed....Shula's is my new Orlando favorite!

Pros: Steak was incredible, service was great

Cons: Portions too big, it's on Disney Property

I recently went to Shula’s Steakhouse for a special occasion on my visit to Orlando. I work as a professional chef in Manhattan, and I am a devoted carnivore who looks for a good steak house in any city. I’ve heard so many good things abut Shula’s, but I simply cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone who knows good steak. I will praise the service and the cooks there: they are professional and try to deliver a quality experience to the guest. I cannot say that value can be found anywhere, however, since prices (especially the mark-up on wine) are outrageous for what they offer. Granted, this is supposedly a place for people on company accounts, but $45 for a bottle of Ravenswood wine I’ve seen at Publix for $15 is unreal. The meat my guest had was cooked properly, the sides were flavorful (albeit a bit dull and simplistic for the price), and the service was prompt. It’s Orlando and you won’t find the refinements that you would in ultra-fine dining restaurants, but I knew that going in. I won’t comment for what small mistakes I saw, but it’s the big mistakes and cut corners that will keep me (and probably others) from this place forever. My biggest gripe is the quality of the steak, and that should be the ultimate focus of a STEAKhouse. My Kansas City Strip was cooked as I requested, but there were chunks of cartilage on the ends that seemed to have been ignored by a careless butcher who wanted to get the weight right above all else. Since it’s the only thing on the plate, and they don’t offer sauces, it had better be a great $38 steak. I mentioned this to the dining room captain, and he sent us a great dessert on the house, but it was a dead deal at that point. I know nobody is perfect, but I DO know that many smaller restaurants get these things right without all the corporate money and staff. It just seems so greedy - someone was cheap on the meat because of a steady customer flow of people who don’t know good food and have money to burn.

Pros: Prompt service and a strong wine list

Cons: No value for the price
