Careful! Definitely get a second opinion before proceeding!. If I had to do it over again, I would definitely shop around. I needed to get the job done quickly so I did not have the time. I have a Grand Cherokee Jeep and my temp guage was reading hot. Took the Jeep to Tuffy. I needed a new "fan relay switch". I also put in a new serpentine belt. Total part costs were about $155. Total bill was $492.08. Wow. I did get an estimate but I at the time I did not realize that labor cost were this steep. I dropped the Jeep off at about 8am and it was done at 10:30am. They charged me 2 and a half hours of labor at $94/hr. I asked desk manager about htis charge and he said that is a normal labor charge these days. In retrospect, I would go ahead and get a diagnosis of the problem and pay the $30-$50 fee. Then, I would check around not only for better labor prices but also better part prices. If enough people go elsewhere, maybe the costs will come down.
Watch out!. Watch out! Took my car in because it did not start. They wanted $500 to replace the starter. While they were looking for the problem they claimed the starter failed. I took the car back and replace a relay for $10.80. Either they have extremly poor diagnostic skills or they wanted to do unessarsary work. The starter motor they were charging $300 for the part with a 12 month warrenty. Auto Zone sells them for $110 with lifetime warrenty. Took the car back but still had to pay $85 for diagnostic fee. They said the starter failed after 2 cranks so I do not know what the diagnostic fee was for? The real problem was discovered by PepBoys as a failed fuel pump relay.
