Editorial Review for Anh Hong – by Sylvia Whitman

The Scene
A corner storefront with servers in black and green--which match the lacquer and table linen.

The Food
Soups, salads, noodles, rice and grilled meats--in various combinations. Usual dishes feature warm noodles atop cool bean sprouts and heaps of cilantro, mint, white radish, lemon grass, and even banana flower--all dumped into huge bowls of broth. Unusual menu items include steam round cakes (a sort of rice grits with dried shrimp and fried onion flaked on top), shrimp paste on crab claw and crispy (outside) golden pancakes with shrimp, pork and sprouts in a turmeric-esque batter. Order anything grilled: the crunchy crusts should appeal to even the most wary diner. On a scale of tame to adventurous, first come rice platters, then rice vermicelli, then soup. For a light, sweet drink, try the lychee juice. Skip the hot and spicy beef soup: the flabbiness of the beef and bologna may turn off out-of-towners.

We found Anh Hong through the City Search site and ate there at lunchtime when we visited Orlando in Feb. Our server quickly realized that we needed help with the extensive menu. She guided us by asking what we liked and made recommendations. The food arrived quickly and was absolutely delicious. The spring rolls, not fried, were scrumptious. We both had squid dishes (different ones) , something we cannot get in our favorite family Chinese restaurant at home...cooked to tender perfection and deliciously "hot." The best part was realizing that this was a family owned restaurant...our favorite kind. When we finished eating, the "hostess" came to our table to welcome us. We learned that she was part of the family who owned the restaurant. We were delighted to learn about their journey to America and then to meet her two daughters and her nieces when they arrived after school with cream filled doughnuts to snack on! We'd love to return and hope that YOU will give it a try. The restaurant is on a corner and was easy to find.

Pros: Great value, good service, welcoming to "newcomers"

Cons: None that we noticed

Not a fan of big fancy loud restaurants. Then try Anh Hong. Its nice and quite atmosphere allows one to enjoy and savor the delicious Vietnamese cuisine it offers. Very few of its kind, Anh Hong is a small humble restaurant that you can relax and enjoy an impeccable meal without having to deal with all the commotion that comes along with the more than annoying larger crowded restaurants. With its friendly employees not being distracted by multiple customers its service is more individualized. Speaking of service, delivery is amazing. Before you even get the opportunity to ask "whats taking so long" your meal arrives promptly under your nose blessing you with its aromas. With its excellent atmosphere, and incredible service, Anh Hong is just one of those restaurants you feel at home in. Not to mention the price. I felt as if i was robbing the place when i saw the bill. With that said, Anh Hong gets a double thumbs up and 1st place on my fine dining list.

Pros: Small and quite

Cons: Parking
