Editorial Review for Linda's La Cantina – by Sylvia Whitman
The Scene
Turn right and you enter an old-fashioned lounge, with booths and a distinctive "fire fountain" next to an often hopping bar. Head left and you step up to the dining room, festooned with arbors of plastic grapevines and Naugahyde-vinyl tablecloths.
The Food
Tried and true. In addition to house cuts of corn-fed Iowa beef, Linda's serves Hawaiian chicken, a couple of surf selections, and four "Italian dinners." Entr¿es come with salad, bread and choice of potatoes or vegetable of the day.
What to Order
Steak, from dainty filet mignons to burly New York or sirloin strips. All the meat is aged and butchered in the restaurant's recesses. To avoid a drowning salad, ask for dressing on the side. Linda's serves a tart key-lime pie--fine, but not homemade.
What to Skip
Don't set your taste buds on exotic herb bread--or anything else you wouldn't like cooked the plain ol' way.

Insider Tips
"Sunset Menu"Refers not to the clientele but to the time of day that the restaurant offers a few selections at a discount. Although many senior citizens take advantage of the early-bird specials, the restaurant pipes in James Taylor rather than Lawrence Welk.
Ye Shall ReceiveAs a family operation, Linda's isn't constrained by corporate policy, so just ask if you'd like to bring your own birthday cake or order a custom cut of meat. According to the manager, "There's almost nothing we won't do."

My husband and I returned to Lindas after about a 10 year period and found nothing had changed! Great food, nice atmosphere and good prices. You do kinda step back in time, the sketches of the area from 50 years ago really take you back. We decided to become regulars!

Although I wasn't impressed with my first visit a few years ago, my dad convinced me to give Linda's another try--this time with two kids in tow. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and the ambience, as well as how accomodating they were with the 3 kids in our large-ish party. While I wouldn't recommend Linda's for families with restless kids (it's too crowded and busy for running around), ours managed to stay seated--and they liked the food. We'll definitely be going again.
