The Scene
At first impression, the Maitland Historical Museum and Telephone Museum sounds more like a pathetic stab at hard-to-find local culture than a place of merit. But these
co-joined museums hold many surprises, and what they lack in space and breadth is more than made up for in character.
The Museums
The museums are small, collectively taking up only four modest rooms in a turn-of-the-century house, but they're packed with information. Inside, you can read about the history of Maitland, from orange-growing community to vacation spot to modern-day city, and view artifacts and photographs from way back when. Those familiar with the area will most definitely recognize the names of Maitland's founders by the streets and parks named after them. Because of that, and the charm of the caretakers, you sense a pride these people feel for their city.
Telephones
In the back, the Telephone Museum not only houses an impressive collection of telephones and circuit equipment from past to present, but it also documents the work of Carl H. Galloway, the Maitland local who brought the telephone to the Central Florida area.…
