Editorial Review for Colorado Fondue Company – by Natasha Lawrence
The Scene
This restaurant might have the markings of a national chain, but it's actually a popular, one-of-a-kind local destination. The Rocky Mountain-themed decor and menu have been continually updated for a loyal clientele. The mountain lodge-style dining area and bar are separate. Service is attentive and infused with friendly safety reminders, since much of the self-cooking takes place on a sizzling-hot slab of granite.
The Food
Choose cheese combinations for the fondue appetizer, large enough for two people. The aged cheddar and Swiss Emmenthaler, melted in a seasoned beer base and served with assorted breads, veggies, grapes and apple chunks, are outstanding. Sizzle entrees of marinated chicken breast slices and large cubes of filet mignon on the hot rock to personal taste. Dessert is a platter of assorted cake cubes, fresh strawberries, apples and marshmallows dipped in melted Kahlua milk chocolate with crushed macadamia nuts.

I've been to both the MeltingPot and Colorado Fondue, and I have to say I much prefer Colorado Fondue. The service is better, the atmosphere is much more relaxed (I think The MeltingPot is too stuffy and formal to really enjoy yourself), and the food is delicious. I've been at least a dozen times over the past decade or so, and I've always had a good meal. Don't be afraid to ask for a new hot rock while you're eating your entree. While every course is worth trying, definitely save room for desert. And make reservations!

For years, this has been our "destination" restaurant for birthdays and other celebrations. I recommend it to anyone seeking delicious food in a great atmosphere, served by prompt and courteous wait staff. While I disagree with a previous reviewer's comment that "this is not fondue" ("Fondue" comes from the french word "to melt" and originally only applied to cheese; "Fondue Bourguignonne" describes raw meat dipped in oil while "Fondue Chinoise" describes meat cooked in broth) they do have some non-traditional choices including several tasty variations on the traditional cheese appetizer fondue and the always-necessary chocolate fondue dessert. They also offer several assortments of meat to cook, in broth and on a hot rock - the rock is perfectly manageable if you just sprinkle a little salt on it. If either rock or broth cools, the servers are always glad to bring another. As for getting a table - We always make reservations. The wait can be quite long if you haven't pre-booked, but you can usually call the day you plan to dine and get a table.
Pros: High-quality ingredients, you control your dinner, great cheese and chocolate
Cons: I wouldn't dine here with kids.
