Editorial Review for The Coffee House of Thornton Park – by Sylvia Whitman
The Scene
Venezuelan-born owner Rigo Davila and wife, Audrey, have polished a renovated downtown bungalow into an intimate retreat. To the soothing trickle of the fountain, guests can sip in the shade at one of a half dozen tables in the brick courtyard planted with pots and impatiens. Step inside and choose between high tables or a comfy sofa and chairs clustered in a VCR/game area.
The Food
Beverages are the main attraction, of course: a house blend of Panamanian Larida Estate coffee (bought green and roasted in town), Italian Lavazza espresso, latte, chai, etc. Don't overlook the cool drinks, especially peach iced tea or a nostalgic caffeine-free special called a dreamsicle with milk and orange syrup. The Davilas have kept food simple: sandwiches on croissants (shrimp salad has a satisfying celery crunch) with bags of Terra chips and classy baked goods bought from vendors like Old Hearth bakery and Jeff's Gourmet Desserts. If you're springing for one of the pricey treats from Bruno's kitchen, choose the hazelnut cake over the chocolate mousse. Or try a more affordable cranberry muffin.
