Epcot: Mexico Pavilion

Editorial Review for Epcot: Mexico Pavilion – by Eyal Goldshmid

The Highlights
Outside, this pavilion features some of Epcot's most breathtaking set designs, in the form of churchlike cantinas and Aztec pyramids. (The far end of the country also houses a garden filled with vegetation native to Mexico's tropical regions.) Inside, you'll find interesting exhibits on native sculpture, a tranquil boat ride called El Rio del Tiempo ("the River of Time") and an enormous plaza filled with shopping and dining options, including the much-lauded San Angel Inn Mexican restaurant. Lighting is dim and a bit foreboding, but the atmosphere is always friendly.

Features
The easygoing river ride offers a relaxing, musical journey through Mexico's mystical past (without the revolutions, of course) and tourist-centric present. You'll see traditional costumes, old-world celebrations, landscaping, artwork and more--all of it set to enjoyable Latin music.

From view of the Aztec temple outside, a lot of visitors don’t realize how big the inside Mexico pavilion… or that there is a wonderful, relaxing boat ride inside. The lazy voyage by water highlights Mexican history and culture in a manner that at times feels reminiscent of the iconic Disney attraction, “It’s A Small World.” The ride at the beginning goes right by the main restaurant, the San Angel Inn, which is situated at the back of the pavilion. The Inn is romantic, right by the water and illuminated by candles, but the food I found to be average and the menu choices to be quite pithy. (If you’re craving a margarita, just go to the pavilion’s fast food counterpart right outside the temple). The main section of the pavilion’s interior though is the adorable Mexican market place, where visitors can also peruse the remarkable glasswork, jewelry, sombreros and other souvenirs. Under the dimly lit and starlined sky of the pavillion, one loses all track of time... and the feeling that they're in a theme park.

Pros: ride, shopping, ambience, architecture

Cons: restaurant

The Mexico Pavilion is one of my favorites in the the world showcase. It is a very nice set up inside that looks like a Mexican market. There are several shops. The small ride inside is not the best Disney has to offer, but it is cute and it is a good chance to sit and be cool for a moment. San Angel Inn Mexican restaurant is very pretty, but unfortunately the food does not live up to the look of the restaurant. I really think it was some of the worst food at Disney. Go just to check it out and eat at the cheaper, better place across the street, the mexican place on the water.

Pros: Very nice Pavilion

Cons: Food
