At LA Fitness you can have the option of working out with "Body of Change" trainers. I love my trainer, but the sales staff is a real crowd to handle. I signed a sales agreement under the assumption from the sales person that if I signed up for 3 days a week, that at any time I could drop it down to once or twice a week with no extra charge. Well, I have started taking night classes and can only make it once a week now. Now they are saying that policy never existed and I would never be able to drop my days down. So, I have to buyout my policy for a billion dollars or continue paying $500/month for a service I will rarely get to use. Pretty much, I was taken advantage of and lied to so somebody could make their sales quota--which is a great way to do business and keep your clients. They may keep me until my contract is up, but I am getting the hell out of that gym when it is over. Plus, they gym is always crowded, they have no alternative equipment such as bosu , etc. Not to mention, people's cars are broken into frequently at this gym. Typical gym scam ordeal...don't let it happen to you.
Pros: Large gym, lots of machines, good Body Pump class Tue-8p.m.
Cons: Overcrowded, hot, sales staff has head in the clouds

I go to the one in midtown, but I thought it unfair of the above reviews that they're about the personal training and not the gym itself. if you've never been to an LA Fitness, I imagine those reviews would scare you away. LA Fitness works great for me. Membership fee is only $35/mo (although I signed up when they first opened, it might be slightly higher now). My only problem with LA Fitness in general is their website doesn't tell you which facilities have which amenities. Ignore the personal trainers, which seems to be everyone else's problem with them. They work independently and are like car salesmen, but you don't have to do personal training (which is extra) to belong to the gym.
Pros: Convenient hours, economical, clean
Cons: website could allow for better searching
